Laborer Position

The following duties are expectations of the Laborer. This is a hands-on position that completes day-to-day operations on a commercial and/or residential project site. The Laborer is responsible for carrying out the project installations as directed, ensuring tasks are completed on schedule, to specification, and in compliance with safety standards. This role will work directly with the labor lead, and foreman roles on a daily basis and will report directly to the foreman.

Role Responsibilities

  • Construction Duties: Assist with site preparation, including shoveling, raking, wheel barrowing, and leveling soil. Assist with installing hardscapes, including cutting, transporting, and leveling pavers. Plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and other greenery. Assist with building irrigation systems, including sleeving, installing lines, sprinklers, and testing for faults. Load, unload, and transport materials, equipment, and site furnishings as needed.
  • Maintenance Duties: Mow, edge, and trim lawns using various equipment. Prune trees, shrubs, and hedges. Weed, mulch, and fertilize gardens and planting beds. Remove debris and maintain a clean work environment. Perform basic maintenance on landscaping equipment.
  • Safety: Wear safety boots, hardhat & reflective gear at all times. Wear glasses, gloves & masks when needed. Attend all morning huddles and safety meetings. Ask questions if you have any. Cut materials on a piece of wood or surface other than your body or finished works.
  • Quality Control: Perform inspections of work being done, ensuring that all tasks meet the specified quality standards. Alert team leads of any issues witnessed so they are able to ensure the daily tasks are complete and materials are secure prior to leaving the site.
  • Timecard: Clock in to correct job via mobile app at the start of work each day.  Clock out each day once work has been completed.  Call Foreman and/or Superintendent if you are going to be late or absent.  Give notice of pre-planned absences well ahead of time. 
  • Problem-Solving: Address and resolve issues on the job site related to the work, materials, or personnel. Proactively identifies and makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding the project you are responsible for.
  • Training and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to Leads, helping them develop their skills and improve work quality. Notifies the Superintendent of any Laborers who need coaching and or replacement. Take care in what you do – ask yourself, is this quality work?
  • Cleanliness: Ensure the job site, work vehicles, and shop are organized, clean, and compliant with health and safety regulations. Keep tools and supplies in their assigned bags/boxes/storage containers. Put tools back after use and let the team lead know if any supplies are running low. When looking for items, put other items back that you have removed. Keep your feet free and clear – do not step on tools, materials, etc.

Qualifications

  • Communication: Thorough and proactive communicator in native language.  Ability to speak English preferred.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience: 1+ years of commercial or residential landscaping experience.
  • Transportation: Have the consistent ability to be on time to the shop and/or job site assignment at the required time via your own means – either by car/valid driver’s license or bus at own expense.
  • General: Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn. Physically fit and able to perform manual labor. Able to show up and be prepared for work every day independently and as part of a team.

Benefits (after 90 day probationary period)

  • Medical Insurance: Offered for full time employees (32+ hrs week) JH contributes 50% toward your monthly total due (employee only).  Family members can be added to policy but do not receive JH contributions.
  • Dental Insurance: Offered to all after 60 days of employment. JH does not contribute toward this policy. 
  • 401k: JH contributes up to a 4% match to this policy.
  • PTO: Accrue PTO at a tiered scale to be used or paid out on a requested basis.  Specific dates for use subject to approval from Superintendent.

Labor Lead Position

The following duties are expectations of the Labor Lead. This is a hands-on supervisory position that manages day-to-day operations on a commercial project site. The Labor Lead is responsible for overseeing the work of the crew, ensuring tasks are completed on schedule, to specification, and in compliance with safety standards. This role requires the ability to lead by example, motivate the leads and laborers, and work closely with the Superintendent to ensure the successful completion of the project. This position is also expected to be able to perform the laborer and lead duties as well on an as needed basis. This role will work directly with the labor, lead, project manager, and superintendent roles on a daily basis and will report directly to the superintendent.

Role Responsibilities

  • Crew Supervision: Supervise labor team, ensuring that tasks are performed efficiently, accurately, and safely.
  • Safety Management: Enforce safety protocols. Ensure Laborers attend weekly safety meetings conducted by the General Contractor at the job site. Report any accidents immediately to the Owner.
  • Quality Control: Perform inspections of work being done, ensuring that all tasks meet the specified quality standards.
  • Material and Equipment Coordination: Ensure that materials and equipment are available and in good condition for use on the job site. Partner with Operations Manager to ensure receipt of deliveries scheduled by the Project Manager.
  • Communication: Report directly to the Superintendent or Project Manager, providing updates on project status, labor issues, and any potential delays. Distributes schedule updates to the office Project Manager at weekly meetings.
  • Problem-Solving: Address and resolve issues on the job site related to the work, materials, or personnel. Proactively identifies and makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding the project you are responsible for.
  • Training and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to Laborers, helping them develop their skills and improve work quality. Notifies the Superintendent of any Laborers who need coaching and or replacement.
  • Work Site Maintenance: Ensure the construction site is organized, clean, and compliant with health and safety regulations. Making suggestions to the leads so they are able to ensure the site is clean and daily tasks are complete prior to leaving the site.
  • Documentation: Keep accurate records of daily activities in DWC documents, including crew attendance, work progress, and material usage.  Take daily progress photos and upload to the project file storage. Make daily updates to assigned project work calendars.  Assist superintendent with filling out weekly project calendar for the GC project teams.
  • Installs: Hands on work on the project as needed.

Qualifications

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to effectively communicate with internal and external project team members
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.  Associate degree preferred.
  • Experience: 5+ years of landscaping experience, 2+ years of commercial or large scale residential irrigation system construction and controller programming, sand set and pedestal set hardscape and furnishing installations, etc.
  • Certifications: Obtain and maintain first aid/CPR, forklift operator, and rigger certs.  Additional job specific certification requirements will be facilitated by JH Landscaping.
  • Driving Record: Have a valid driver’s license with a consistently clean driving record that contains little to no significant errors or lapses in validity.

  • iPad: Functioning iPad with protective case provided for easy access to project plans.
